UCLA Conference Center

Originally called The North Shore Tavern, the Main Lodge and nine guest cottages were built in the early 1920s. This was Lake Arrowhead's most exclusive resort, open for the summer months only. At that time there were no roads to the North Shore, so guests were ferried across the lake from the Lake Arrowhead Village on the South shore.

The Cedar guest lodge (on the northeast side of our grounds) was added in the 1940s to accommodate the seasonal employees. They moved down to Palm Springs for work during the winter months.

During the 1950s the resort served as the Yacht Club of Lake Arrowhead for a few summers, and the Cedar guest lodge was used as the area's grammar school.

In 1957 the lake and surrounding area were owned by The Los Angeles Turf Club. They sold the lake and surrounding area but wanted to donate the North Shore Tavern to an educational institution. First approached was USC, who declined. Then the Regents of the University of California were offered the property and wisely accepted! Of course, there was a stipulation that the property would be completely self-supporting, not receiving any university or state funds, and that it would be used for educational purposes only.

The first conferences at the UC Conference Center were held in 1958 under the administration of UCLA-UNEX. Late in the 1960s, administration of the Center was moved to System-wide Extension; then later to UCR Extension, and finally in 1982 to UCLA Business Enterprises. That's when the name of the Center changed to UCLA Conference Center.

Remodeling and expansion of the Center started in the fall of 1984. This included the addition of three new conference rooms on the second floor of the Main Lodge and 32 two-story guest rooms with fireplaces called "Condolets".

BRUIN WOODS, UCLA Alumni Association's Family Resort Program, started in the summer of 1985. The addition of the Iris Conference Room and 12 additional Condolets was completed in 1990. In June of 1995 we completed the replacement of 26 vintage rooms with 30 new Condolets.

The revenues of the Conference Center have increased from $600,000 to $3.7 million since UCLA took over in 1982. Occupancy has grown from 11,000 for a 12-month season to 31,000 for our nine-month conference season, aided significantly by our famous Family Holiday Weekends.

We host over 300 conferences each year, most of which are University of California groups (41%) but also include a significant portion of other academic groups (24%). The remainder is composed of charity, religious, and health organizations, as well as private enterprise.

We can accommodate conferences of up to 200 persons. Our Complete Conference Plan rate is per person, per night that includes lodging, three full meals, meeting rooms, audio-visual equipment, and coffee service during meetings.

University of California departments have the privilege of reserving dates several years in advance. Non-University of California groups may book dates up to one year in advance.
